About Terry Thompson

I am an artist living and working in San Francisco. I was born and raised in the Bay-Area, and received my MFA from San Jose State University after working several years in the Silicon Valley as an equipment engineer.

For more than a decade, I have focused primarily on paintings of old neon signage that had somehow avoided the wrecking ball—signs that had lived. I see these signs as historically and emotionally charged metaphors for unrelenting time. In these paintings I strive to reveal the hidden beauty of these banal, rusty, relics.

Recently I have also been painting various "Pop" culture products; particularly food products with interesting typology on their packaging.  Text is the common thread that runs through this work and most of my sign paintings.

I've also been steadily exhibiting my photography more.  This parallel development has been a natural growth since my paintings are based on my photographs.  Even though the photographic work is often more abstract than my paintings, they are related because the subjects are typically derived from an urban landscape.  Within my photographs I explore the interplay of form, color, pattern, and texture; and just as in my sign paintings, I try to find the beauty in the often-overlooked.
